Neurofibromatosis is a group of diseases characterized by the development of various types of benign or malignant tumors that affect the central or peripheral nerves. There is no specific treatment for this disease, benign tumors are removed surgically, and malignant tumors (which develop less often) are treated with radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Plexiform neurofibroma is a benign tumor that forms in the region of large peripheral nerves. The term “plexiform” comes from the Latin word “plectere”, meaning “weaving” – the tumor, as it were, “sprouts” into normal tissues. If a plexiform neurofibroma is located near vital structures, an increase in its size may cause pain, neurological symptoms, deformity, and dysfunction of the organ.

History of the child

Daniil – the second child in the family – was born on time, developed according to age. The only thing that alerted parents and doctors was a slight induration in the lumbar region. Over time, the neoplasm began to increase in size, after lengthy examinations, a diagnosis was made – neurofibromatosis, plexiform neurofibroma. In the case of Daniil, the disease also manifested itself in bone pathology. At about the age of five, the boy began to have a curvature of the spine. The child was advised to wear a Chenot corset. In 2018, the tumor was removed at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology in Borovlyany.

“I am immensely grateful to the Belarusian doctors who help us fight the disease, our oncologists and surgeons. But now we are forced to look for an opportunity to perform spinal surgery abroad. In Belarus, we were recommended conservative treatment for scoliosis – wearing a corset. But due to neurofibromatosis, we cannot use the brace properly. With the onset of adolescence, Daniil’s scoliosis intensified. Daniil is losing weight, he suffers from back pain, headaches, difficulty breathing. We asked for a consultation at the Sant Joan de Deu Children’s Hospital in Barcelona, after reviewing all the examination data, we are ready to accept Daniil for treatment. A high-tech operation, in which an orthopedist, an oncologist and a neurologist are simultaneously involved, will help correct existing spinal deformities and normalize the functioning of internal organs. In Belarus, such operations are not performed on children. Without surgery, the prognosis is extremely disappointing, so we ask you to help raise funds for Daniil’s treatment!” – Daniil’s mother Liudmila Bakhanovich addresses all caring people.
